FERPA & School Use
Last updated: April 9, 2026
Our Commitment to FERPA
SpartaQuiz is designed from the ground up to support FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) compliance for schools and districts. We understand that education records are sensitive and that schools have legal obligations to protect them.
How SpartaQuiz Operates Under FERPA
When a school or teacher uses SpartaQuiz as an instructional tool, SpartaQuiz operates as a "school official" with a "legitimate educational interest" under FERPA. This means:
- We access and process student education records only to provide the SpartaQuiz service
- We do not disclose education records to unauthorized third parties
- We do not use education records for commercial purposes, advertising, or AI training
- We support school and district data governance requirements
What Data We Access
As part of normal platform operation, SpartaQuiz may process:
- Student usernames or Sparta aliases used as the default student identity
- Quiz and assessment responses
- Writing drafts and revision history
- Math practice session data
- Teacher-entered notes and feedback
All of this data is used exclusively to provide the educational service and generate reports for teachers and parents.
Privacy by Design
SpartaQuiz is built with privacy-first architecture:
- Alias-based student accounts: new student accounts do not require legal names
- Teacher-controlled visibility: teachers determine what student data is accessible and to whom
- Role-based access: parents only see their own linked child's data; teachers only see their assigned students
- No cross-student profiling: student data is never combined for external analysis or sold
Student Account Creation
Consistent with COPPA and FERPA principles:
- Students under 13 cannot independently register for SpartaQuiz
- Student accounts are created by teachers or parents/guardians
- Schools may use SpartaQuiz under their existing FERPA annual notification or may execute a data processing agreement with SpartaQuiz
Data Processing Agreements
For schools and districts that require a formal Data Processing Agreement (DPA) or Student Data Privacy Agreement, SpartaQuiz is prepared to execute such agreements. Contact us at support@spartaquiz.com to request a DPA.
Parental Rights Under FERPA
Parents and eligible students (18+) have the right to:
- Inspect and review education records maintained by SpartaQuiz on their behalf
- Request correction of inaccurate information
- Request deletion of their student's account and data
To exercise these rights, contact the school directly or reach us at support@spartaquiz.com.
No Student Data Sold — Ever
SpartaQuiz will never sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose student education records for commercial purposes. This is both a legal commitment and a core company value.
